THE REGIONS OF GERMANY
Southern Germany The south of Germany offers visitors plenty of options. The most important cities are Munich, Stuttgart, Augsburg, Ulm, Würzburg. Ratisbona and Nuremberg. The federal state of Bavaria: Bavaria, with its impressive diversity, is without a doubt Germany’s prime tourist destination. The state offers a varied landscape, pristine nature and clean air, a rich cultural heritage, year round opportunities for outdoor sports, renowned spa facilities and outstanding holiday destinations, regardless of the weather. The Bavarian culture is rich in celebrations and boasts a unique regional cuisine. Picturesque lakes, such as the Königssee and the Berchtesgaden, as well as popular tourist destinations such as Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Mittenwald, are set against the backdrop of the impressive mountain range of the Alps.
The Alps and lower Alpine region: The Bavarian Alps and the Allgäu attract visitors year round. Here you find Germany’s highest peak, the Zugspitze (2962 m/9700 ft). The German route through the Alps runs 400 km/250 mi, from Lindau on Lake Constance in the west and Berchtesgaden, near the Königssee in the east, along the magnificent northern stretch of the Alps. Enjoy spectacular snow covered mountains, idyllic lakes and valleys and a landscape dotted with typical Bavarian villages and romantic churches.
Lake Constance (Bodensee): Lake Constance is set in the heart of an international region. Four countries come together at this location: Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the small Principality of Liechtenstein. It is this variety that makes Lake Constance one of the most fascinating destinations in Europe. Approximately 2.5 million people live in the region around Lake Constance, mostly German speaking, although there are a variety of regional differences. The most interesting destinations include Linday, Constance, Meersburg and the island of Mainau.
The federal state of Baden Wurtemberg is Germany’s third largest state, after Bavaria and Lower Saxony. In terms of tourism, Baden-Wurtemberg is the second most important German state, after Bavaria.
