10 DAYS – FLY & DRIVE
Bavaria/Southern GermanyTRAVELOGUE Day 1: Frankfurt Travel assistance upon arrival in Frankfurt. Pick-up of rental car at the airport and overnight accommodation in or near Frankfurt. At first glance, Frankfurt looks like an impressive modern city with its skyscrapers. However, from up close the city has a unique charm of its own. Enjoy a walk along Römerberg, a beautifully preserved neighborhood on the banks of the Mainz River, visit the museums and the bars in Saschsenhausen, stop for a bite at the “Fressgasse” (the food alley) or stroll along the elegant Goethe street. Overnight stay in Frankfurt. Day 2: Frankfurt – Würzburg - Rothenburg ob der Tauber (194 km/124 mi) In the morning you drive to Würzburg where you enjoy a sightseeing tour of the city. Würzburg is surrounded by vineyards and is the former seat of the Episcopal diocese. Today it is a lively university city. Continue your trip to Rothenburg ob ter Tauber. Enjoy a panoramic tour of the city, a dream destination for romantic travelers. Rothenburg is one of the oldest cities on this so-called “Romantic route” and is strategically located on the windy Tauber River. The narrow cobblestones streets and lovely buildings, fountains and wooden Bavarian houses give the city an almost medieval atmosphere. Return to your hotel. Day 3: Rothenburg ob der Tauber – Nuremberg (113 km/70 mi) After breakfast you leave for Nuremberg. A city of half a million, Nuremberg offers an interesting and harmonious blend of modern and medieval city. The gothic churches, the romantic enxaimel Bavarian-style houses and the peaceful squares create an unforgettable atmosphere. The city is also known for its many culinary specialties: grilled sausages, roasted carp and the city’s best known delicacy, the spiced bread (lebkuchen), a popular Christmas tradition. Overnight stay in Nuremberg. Day 4: Nuremberg – Regensburg – Passau (230 km/143 mi) Drive to Regensburg in the morning. The city boasts a rich collection of buildings from the 12th to 14th century, inspired by Italian-style architecture. The large number of churches and convents are a testimony to the importance of Regensburg as a religious center in the Middle Ages. Continue your trip to Passau. This city, on the border between Germany and Austria, is set at a very privileged location between the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz rivers. The historic center of the city with its baroque churches and noble houses is located on a narrow strip of land between the Inn and the Danube. Overnight stay in Passau. Day 5: Passau – Salzburgo (117 km/72 mi) After breakfast you drive to Salzburg, the center of Austrian baroque and the birthplace of composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Salzburg’s location is quite spectacular, surrounded by mountains and divided by the Salzach river, near the German border. The historic center, a masterpiece of baroque architecture, is located on the south bank of the Salzach River and is made up of beautiful churches, squares, terraces and fountains. Mozart’s influence can be found wherever you go, in the museums, the houses, the squares, the chocolates and liquors. Overnight accommodation. Day 6: Salzburgo – Berchtesgaden – Bad Reichenhall (47 km/29 mi) This morning you drive to Berchtesgaden, surrounded by the peaks of Watzmann, the “Steineres Meer” (the stone sea) and the mountains of the Hagengebirge. Berchtesgaden is the final destination on the route through the German Alps and a perfect jumping off points for many excursions and tours. This town is located at a beautiful spot, surrounded by exquisite scenery and Watzmann peak. In the summer this is a very popular destination for hikers. Enjoy a boat tour on the Königssee and try out the famous echo. The royal palace at Berchtesgaden shows you a glimpse of life back in the days of the monarchy. Overnight stay in Bad Reichenhall, a spa resort with salt mines and a mystical atmosphere. Day 7: Bad Reichenhall – Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Zugspitze (173 km/107 mi) This morning you travel to Garmisch Partenkirchen, the capital of winter sports and the site of the 1936 Winter Olympics. Here you will find Germany’s highest mountain peak, the Zugspitze (2962 m/9700 ft). We recommend a visit to the large ski ramp at Garmisch Partenkirchen. Another great tour is the cable car ride to the top of Zugspitze. The views from the top of this mountain are truly spectacular. Overnight stay in Garmisch Partenkirchen. Day 8: Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Neuschwanstein – Munich (185 km/101 mi) In the morning you travel to the Neuschwanstein castle, built by Ludwig II, who was also known as the “Mad King”. This Bavarian king had this castle built between 1869 and 1886, in a neo-romantic style, to resemble the medieval castles of the German knights. The result is a palace that seems to have stepped out of a fairy tale. Finish your drive in Munich. Overnight stay in Munich. Day 9: Munich Munich, the capital of Bavaria, is famous for its Beer Festival (Octoberfest), celebrated at the end of September and beginning of October. The city is near the Alps. One of the city’s main attractions is the Gothic cathedral; the spires with Italian domes can be seen from miles away, making the church one of Munich’s landmark buildings. The Marienplatz square with clock tower is also worth a visit. Since the founding of the city, the Marienplatz square has been the geographic and social center of Munich. Today the neo-gothic style city hall dominates the square and the clock tower’s bells chime punctually three times a day. Day 10: Munich – Augsburg – Frankfurt (427 km/265 mi) You have the option of flying back from Munich or driving back to Frankfurt. If you choose to drive back to Frankfurt, we recommend a brief stop in Augsburg to visit the picturesque neighborhood of Fuggerei. This neighborhood was built between 1519 and 1525 by Jakob Fugger, the”rich”, to house the poor of the city. It is made up of eight streets with 53 small houses with elegant façades, a church and several government buildings.
