Germany

Altötting
For more than 1250 years, the charming baroque town of Altötting has welcomed pilgrims who come to worship at the most important Virgin Mary shrine in Germany. The town is nestled in the beautiful Alps of Upper Bavaria between Munich, Passau and Salzburg. Each year more than a million pilgrims and visitors from all across Europe gather here to worship the Black Madonna in the chapel of Altötting.
We recommend a pilgrimage weekend in Altötting; visit Marktl (the birthplace of Pope Benedict XVI), participate in the candlelight procession and attend a mass at Saint Ana Church.

Schönstatt
Schönstatt, near Coblenz, is the birthplace and world center of the International Schönstatt Movement. Every day pilgrims from all across the world flock to the Original Sanctuary, the center of the shrine devoted to Mary and the Apostolic Movement of Schönstatt.
Schönstatt can be conventiently visited from Cologne, Frankfurt or Coblenz; accommodation for an overnight stay is available.

AUSTRIA

The complete network of pilgrimage trails to Mariazell consists of approximately 680 miles. Each year thousands of people undertake a pilgrimage to this holy place.
You can travel to Mariazell on foot, book a day-tour from Salzburg or Vienna or spend a few days here.

Einsiedeln Monastery
The Benedictine monastery of Einsiedeln is one of the main places of pilgrimage in Switzerland and the best example of baroque Swiss architecture. Its name is derived from the German word “einsiedler“, which means hermit. The monastery and the Black Madonna are an important place on the Camino de Santiago and pilgrims from all across the world travel to this holy destination. A trip to Einsiedeln is also a very pleasant experience, thanks to the excellent roads and train connections and the beautiful Swiss landscape, framed by Lake Zurich and the green rolling plains.
A visit to the Einsiedeln monastery can be undertaken from Zurich or Luzern.
